KOALA

      endangered-koala.jpg

Name

Koala

County or continent

Australia

Habitat

Eucalyptus forest

Diet

Herbivore

Type

Mammal

It measures from 60 to 85 centimeters and its weight in adult age can vary from 6 to 12 kilograms

Why is it endangered ?:

it is valued for its soft fur.

if a disease is spread among them, they have no resistance against it because of them having the same genetic pool. Therefore they are not immune to disease and if one Koala gets a virus, the whole community is infected by it as well. Often these diseases bring disastrous results and hundreds or thousands or maybe even millions can be wiped out because of a single virus.

their habitat is being destroyed. Besides having no living place, it has lost its source of   food.

As the Koala is a very fussy eater and almost only eats eucalyptus leaves, it has a limited supply of food choice.

S.O.S Dolphin

 endangered-dolphin.jpg

TYPE : mammal

DIET : fish and squid

LIFE SPAN : 40-45ans

Dolphin Social Life : Many researchers agree that dolphins extremely social creatures and actually seem to depend on this interaction while hunting, mating and defending themselves and their pods. Typically, dolphins live and travel in groups ranging from 2-40 dolphins. Research has also shown dolphin pods as large as several hundred members.

Endangered dolphins are a huge concern in our actual society. Why is it a problem? Well, first of all, if such specie like the dolphin is endangered, it means that if this situation is not dealt with properly, soon we might see their specie disappear from our oceans.

Why are dolphins endangered?

There are three main reasons why dolphins are endangered and all of them are related to humans.

1. the first reason is because of tuna fishing .Since both tuna and dolphins follow the same routes, dolphins get caught in the fishermen's nets which are meant to catch tuna. In this case, they get fatally hurt or they drown as a result of it.

2.The second reason is fishing for use in human's cuisine. Nowadays, dolphins are protected by laws but nonetheless between 200,000 and 500,000 dolphins were victimized by fishermen during the 1960-1972 years. Also, even if some laws protect dolphins, it allows a certain amount of dolphins to be accidentally caught which still has a negative impact on the dolphins' species.

3.The last but not least is pollution. Since humans are polluting rivers, seas and oceans, it affects dolphins. Also, since the dolphin is at the top of the food chain, the chemicals that pollute its habitat create the highest level of concentration of these pollutants in its body. As a result, diseases, difficulty to reproduce or even death take their toll on these species.

the leatherback turtle

endangered.jpg

Name: Leatherback Turtle

Type: Oviparous

Diet: Herbivore

Habitat: warm oceans

Size: 6,56 ft (2 m)

Weight: 1 102,31 pounds (500 kilograms)

Lifespan: 50 years

Reasons why it’s endangered:

The Leatherback turtle is mainly endangered because of water pollution and  plastic bags. Indeed, the water is becoming more and more polluted and the turtles mistake the plastic bags for jelly fish. When they swallow a plastic bag, they can't breathe anymore and die.

                       KOMODO DRAGON

endnagered-komodo.jpg

Lenght : 3.6m

Weight : 136kg

Habitat : Indonesia

Natural History of Komodo Dragons

Komodo dragons are carnivores (meat eaters) and will devour any animal they are capable of . Although they are for the most part scavengers, they sometimes capture live prey, including deer, pigs, birds, even young dragons.

Causes of Endangerment of the Komodo Dragon

The current population of Komodo dragons seems relatively stable at about 5,000 animals. Little is known about the species. The dragon's limited distribution makes them highly susceptible to natural or human-caused events, such as storms, fire, or disease.

The primary threats to the dragon's survival include illegal hunting and loss of habitat to human settlement. As was the case with most large, spectacular animals the world over, Komodo dragons were sought as trophies by big-game hunters. They also are killed for skins and feet to make novelties. Early in this century, many Komodo dragons were trapped for sale to zoos and private collectors.

Commercial trade in specimen is illegal under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

The narwhal lives in the Arctic Ocean.

This amazing animal is endangered because it is hunted for its ivory and its power to neutralize the poison.

In adult males, the single tusk (or teeth) continues to grow in a spiral from the front of the head up to 2 m 70. As it has no other teeth, he swallows his food at once. It feeds on squid and crustaceans.

ORANG-UTAN

 endangered-outan.jpg

The animal lives mostly on fruit, young leaves, bark, small vertebrates, bird eggs and insects.

Daytime is spent looking for food and every night the animal builds a new nest about 12 to 18 meters above the ground.

Their life expectancy in the wild is approximately 35 years. Orang-utans live in the tropical forests, lowland forests, tropical swamp forests, and tropical health forests of Borneo and northern Sumatra. About 80 percent of the orang-utan's habitat has been deforested in the past 20 years.

Orang-utan population will be extinct in a decade unless poaching and habitat destruction can be stopped. With losses running at a thousand a year, numbers have plummeted from 12,000 in 1993 to just 6,000 today.

Amur leopard

070419-leopards_big.jpg

Name :Amur leopard

Habitat :Asia

Diet :Carnivore

Male armur leopards weigh 32–48 kg, with exceptionally large males up to 60–75 kg, Females are smaller than the males at 25–43 kg.

Leopards are endangered because of poaching.

There appears to be poaching of leopards as well as their prey species. Poachers include both poor local villagers and newly rich Russians, mainly from the city of Vladivostok, as well as Chinese nationals who illegally cross the border into Russia. Russian hunters kill many more deer than is officially allowed and Amur leopards are sometimes caught in snares as well.

Since 2002, skins or corpses of nine Amur leopards killed by poachers have been found in Russia and at least two leopards have been killed in China.

Leopards are also threatened by the loss of their habitat.

The forests on which Amur leopards depend have slowly disappeared as a result of frequent fires.
